Carrier Oils
Apricot Kernel
Apricot Oil contains Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, B17 (richest plant in the world) and Vitamin E resulting in exceptional revitalising, nourishing and moisturising properties which help to regulate and restructure the skin.
Apricot Oil spreads easily over the skin which makes it a good choice for new or nervous masseurs. It is rich and yet penetrates the skin easily making it an excellent oil for using alone or for blending with other carrier oils. |
Avocado
Avocado Oil is a rich, luxurious and indulgent carrier oil particularly recommended as a moisturising massage oil for people with dry and brittle skin. It is packed with restorative fatty acids to regenerate youthful texture to the skin and it offers the therapeutic benefits of its high Vitamin E content.
Avocado Oil has excellent penetrative powers and a gentle affinity with the skin. |
Calendula
Calendula Oil can be helpful in supporting, restoring and protecting the skin. Calendula Oil is believed to be anti-inflammatory and it is certainly beneficial dry, brittle skin, and sore, inflamed skin conditions such as chapped skin, nappy rash and the "wounds” of childbirth and breast-feeding.
Calendula Oil is a popular carrier oil for manicures as it can help in the therapeutic treatment and restoration of the nail margins and the cuticles. |
Coconut
Coconut Oil naturally contains Lauric Acid, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin E and it has a myriad of uses for skin, hair and body treatments.
Compared to most carrier oils it has much more slippage on the skin when used as a massage oil (i.e. it is difficult to pick up the muscles as the therapist's hands slip quickly across the skin). This high slippage makes it ideal for massaging over dense hair (backs and arms on some men) and over areas of particularly dry skin |
Grapeseed
Grapeseed Oil is a slightly lighter alternative to Sweet Almond Oil. Some therapists prefer Grapeseed Oil for its light texture and for high speed massages where the oil needs to be easily absorbed into the skin to allow the clothes to be put back on quickly.

Jojoba
Jojoba Oil is actually a liquid wax that is extracted from the beans of a plant that grows in the deserts of South America. It is a light textured and deeply penetrating oil that is profoundly nourishing for both skin and hair. It is rich in Vitamin E and also contains Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2 and Vitamin B6.
The oil has excellent moisturising and emollient properties that are suited to all skin types, including dry, mature and teenage skin. Its chemical constituents closely resemble the skin's own natural oil, sebum, which means that it can be helpful for re-balancing oily and problem skin types. It is also an effective hair conditioner that will help to nourish and protect the hair and scalp. |
Neem
Neem Oil has antiviral, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a good choice of base oil to use for individuals who are recuperating after illness or for therapists working in the hospital or care home environment.
Neem oil is high in Vitamin E and rich in emollients and fatty acids which helps to improve fragile skin and restore a soft, smooth and healthy condition. It is useful for treating infected wounds and dry, ulcerated or inflamed skin conditions such as eczema. It is suitable for acne prone skin and for treating athlete's foot and other fungal conditions. |
Peach Kernel
Peach Kernal Oil is a light, fine textured, golden oil with a delicate, sweet aroma. It is rich in minerals, vitamins, particularly vitamin E, and essential fatty acids which all help to promote the skins natural suppleness and protect from environmental damage and the negative effects of a stressful life.
Peach Kernel Oil is mainly used in beauty treatments (particularly facials) as it is easily absorbed by the skin and it is especially recommended for dry, ageing or sensitive skin with thread veins. It is also very helpful in restoring and soothing nail surfaces that have been traumatised by artificial nail treatments. |
Rosehip
Rosehip Seed Oil is an increasingly popular base oil. It is an excellent source of natural vitamin E and vitamin A and is also high in essential fatty acids. It has excellent skin regenerating properties which can help slow the signs of ageing to maintain a firmer, smoother and more youthful complexion.
Rosehip Seed Oil is considered a 'dry' oil, meaning that it soaks into the skin easily and does not leave a greasy residue. It is a wonderful moisturiser and is particularly good for dry, damaged, mature and sunburned skin. It can also be helpful for scarring, stretch marks and skin conditions such as acne, eczema and dermatitis. |
Sesame Seed
Sesame Seed Oil used as a carrier oil offers a blissfully relaxing and comforting treatment. Soya
Soya (Glycine Max) Carrier Oil, a lovely massage oil naturally high in lecithin, sterolins, and vitamin E, makes a great base for your products. Soya Oil is very easy to work with and stays supple, whilst being very light on the skin.

St John's Wort
St John's Wort Carrier Oil is prepared by infusing the flowers in a fixed oil, such as sunflower oil for approximately three weeks. This is then pressed and strained, leaving an oil that is bright red. St John's Wort Oil has soothing, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and analgesic properties and can be used topically for mild burns, bruising, haemorrhoids, varicose veins, minor wounds, sores and ulcers.

Sweet Almond Oil is the most widely used carrier oil, suitable for all skin types. It is rich in minerals, vitamins, proteins and essential fatty acids, helping to soften, nourish and revitalise the skin.
Sweet Almond Oil is especially suited to dry, sensitive and irritated skin and it is used extensively in cosmetics and therapeutic skincare. It is also one of the best multi-purpose base oils to use for massage, as it is almost odourless and is an excellent lubricant. |
